It appears that the x axis units are some unit of time, but I don't understand how the time vector operates. How does this work? (0:tstep:10)

Sorry, didn't get to this yesterday...hopefully you got it figured out.

The x-axis for a time-based signal is of course going to be time (for a time-signal sampled at discrete time intervals your time step will be 1/sampling rate). For the FFT, the abscissa will be frequency.
