For the fracture calculation, why do we need the image files?
To calculate a, do we use the initial a+crack opening?

Those images have the measurement of the crack length, a, which you absolutely need in your calculation of Kq. The crack length is exactly what you measured in the lab using the microscope; the distance from the portion of the bar that was fixtured to the edge of the crack profile.
